FEATURE STORY: The Terrible Two

The Terrible Two
Fear of Success
Low self esteem?
Fear of Change Low goals?
Fear of change is like being locked in a room.
It stifles the imagination, cramps the spirit
and shuts off the creative juices.
Low self esteem and low goals block the way
to success; they are the chains that bind. When
goals are set that are too easily reached, they
are not uplifting or life-changing. People who
combine minimalistic goals with fear of success,
set themselves into a pattern of never
accomplishing anything.
They have set themselves up for failure.
There was a poem written, called the Prisoner of
Chillon. A man was chained to a concrete post for
many years, barely able to move one step. When he
was finally released, he found it was difficult for
him to face freedom. In his words: "Even I regain'd
my freedom with a sigh." The post and the prison
had become his security. It was what he knew. He
felt safe there. It didn't challenge him.
Many people have their own little safe place, from
which they never venture too far away. They are
comfortable there: no stress, no struggles, no
accomplishments.
What, in our writing, reveals these fears? How can
you know if you need to boost your self-esteem, set
more challenging goals, or release a fear of
success?
There are two letters in particular which give
insight into these traits the "t" and the
"y".
As you'll find in Bart Baggett's Grapho-deck (see
SPOTLIGHTED LEARNING TOOL, below), a
t-stem on which the t-bar crosses low signifies low
self-esteem, and low goals. A "y" with a loop that
closes and then curves back down, demonstrates
a fear of success.

People with fear of success may have great ideas and
may want to accomplish what they start, but as they
near the end of a project, they sabotage themselves.
They don't complete what they start. They go on to
something else.
The closer to the baseline the downward turn of the
y-loop gets, the closer the writer will get to the
finish line before quitting. They blow it! This
is the fear of change. They are comfortable with the
status quo and change may bring things they would
rather not face, like responsibility. These people
are programmed to failure.
Those who have these fears, have probably carried
them since childhood. Parents warn their children
about getting hurt, getting lost if they venture
too far, or some other horrible thing that could
happen to them in this big, bad world. This is all
very well-meaning, but can be carried too far.
It puts fear into the child that stays for a
lifetime, like a weekend visitor who never leaves.
Parents pass their own fears to their children and
it all seems perfectly natural. More aggressive
children will try to break the bonds, but will not
always be rewarded for their efforts. They may
be seen as foolhardy, or be told they are reaching
beyond their limits.
Bart always tells us to keep our t-bars high. What
great advice for our children, to program them for
success early on.
In Bart Baggett's book, "Change Your Life in 30 Days,"
The "t" and the "y" are two of the first
letters dealt
with in Grapho-therapy. If you have a loved one with
these traits, this book is a wonderful tool for
overcoming them and programming for success, whether
working with an adult or child. We are surrounded by
people who say, "Yeah, but what if. . ."
Yeah, but what if. . . you succeed?

Q: Can I really change my personality by changing
my handwriting?
A: Grapho-Therapy is one of the most modern
and effective behavioral modification tools available
today. It works for two reasons. First, neuro-muscular
connections have a direct impact on the neuro-pathways
to the brain that hold patterns of behavior.
Secondly, it gives the subject a clear and visual
representation of the change she is making on a
daily basis... reinforcing the belief system and
cementing the change in behavior consciously
and unconsciously.
